4K tips

4K Ultra High-Definition television, or 4K Ultra HD  (its really the same thing), is the next generation of display technology for the home, offering an incredibly immersive viewing experience with superior picture quality.  With more than eight million pixels of resolution, more colors, and higher contrast, 4K Ultra HD is the closest thing to bringing the 4K Digital Cinema experience from movie theaters into your home.  The latest models sport the most recent technical enhancements for an even more “you are there” viewing experience.  This meaning that it literally makes you feel like you are right there in the scene.  Or, as if you are looking through a window onto a live scene in your back yard.  This is no exaggeration, either!  Check it out for your self at your local electronics store.

Ultra HD Premium Specifications

An alliance of manufacturers and movie producers have joined together to create an organization that focuses on new 4K technology and specifications.  This was highly needed as much confusion began to swamp consumers while learning about and shopping for 4K equipment.  Various names and verbiage were being used to sell 4K products, in order to make the product seem ‘better’ than their competition.  For example, some manufacturers began calling 4K TVs,…Ultra High Definition TVs (UHD) as opposed to just “4K”.  When really, they are both basically the same thing.

So, in January 2016, the UHD alliance (UHDA) issued the specifications for the Ultra HD Premium tier.  With this specification, premium 4K Ultra HD TVs are no longer classified simply by offering higher resolution than 1080p TVs, and calling it “4K”.  Now, they must comply with performance metrics for high dynamic range (HDR), peak luminance levels, black levels, and color gamut, among other requirements.  This helps to ‘level the playing field’ for manufacturers while benefiting consumers the most.   In short, an Ultra HD Premium TV will not only offer the best possible viewing experience for consumers, but will be prepared for developments in Ultra HD content coming down the road.  This makes TV’s today significantly ‘future-proof’.  This is extremely important since we all know that the tech industry moves at a snow-ball pace.  4K technology is a rapidly evolving market.  Keep up-to-date with 4K right here at 4KADVICE.COM.

4K UHD Televisions

With many brands and screen sizes to choose from, now is a great time to buy a 4K UHD TV.  Manufacturers and retailers are embracing the term “4K UHD” championed by the Consumer Technology Association to describe this new generation of television.  To be clear, it is now called “4K UHD”, versus only being called “4K” televisions.  This is welcome news and we are pleased that the tech association has made efforts to simplify and explain terminology.  Not only that, but also to set minimum required specifications for all 4K television sets.

Some also are participating in CTA’s voluntary logo program that uses the same term.  Regardless of what they call them, Ultra HD or 4K, major brands all are now offering a range of 4K UHD TVs at various prices.  Today, any family can switch over to 4K on any budget.  Prices and options will only get better in 2017.  Stay on 4KADVICE.COM to find the best deals and prices on 4K UHD TVs and Blu-ray players.  We do all the hard work by searching thousands of merchants to locate the best deals and prices.  We then present them to you along with an education about the 4K product in order that you make informed decisions.

Glossary of 4K terms

4K Ultra High Definition (4K UHD)

First and foremost, we define what 4K UHD is below.  The important factors to remember are that 4K contains 8.3 MILLION pixels in total.  The spec are 2,160 X 3,840 pixel resolution.  To simply what this means think of it this way:  For every ONE pixel on a 1080 HD TV screen, there are FOUR pixels that fit into that same space (the one pixel) on a 4K UHD Television.  That sums it up!  By adding 4 more pixels inside a typical 1080Hd  one pixel of resolution, they are increasing quality by four times!  4K Tvs should produce a picture image that is 4 times better than 1080HD.  Of course, this is not always the case because there are many other factors that come into play when it comes to your final 4K image.  Whether the film was mastered using 4K camera equipment or not, is one of those relevant questions.

  1. The time is now to buy 4K when your 1080HD tv gets old. That is what we did in our house and have loved it ever since. We bought 4K SONY TV a few years ago when they were still very expensive. Today, the same TV is 1/3rd the cost we paid.
Its crazy how technology gets so cheap and prices drop within a year or two. I guess when there are more competitors, and more buyers the prices go down. This is great news for consumers.

    1. I have noticed that trend too: New technology becomes more affordable over a year or two period of time. That is why I haven’t been extremely motivated to upgrade my TV until now. It looks like 4k is now in my price range and I’m excited to enhance my viewing experience.

      1. Hi Steph, Glad to hear that you are jumping on board as far as upgrading to a 4K Ultra HD TV. You are totally correct in that prices nowadays are down near the same price of a new 1080 HD TV. We have all enjoyed HD for about 17 years now since it was first invented around year 2000. Compared to SD- Standard Definition….High Definition was like a miracle at the time. Plus, we got rid of those huge, bulky and very ugly and heavy Tube Boxes. It took 3 grown men to move a larger one of those box TVs. The picture was blurry and horrible.

HD was a very welcomed advance in TV watching technology.
But, here we are 17 years later and it is time for something even better. Many consumers still have NOT upgraded to a 4K TV. Actually most have not heard of 4K, or they simply do not know what it is.

In surveys, many consumers stated that they thought “4K devices” were some kind of exotic, special ‘toy’ that only rich people with disposable income would be buying.

This is so far from the truth. 4K Ultra HD TVs are what is replacing HD- High Definition TVs, JUST LIKE HD replaced SD.

And, 4K resolution makes a HUGE difference compared to HD. This is not some minor enhancement to TV watching.
When you watch a real, native 4K movies on a 4K UHD TV it will blow your mind how real and true-to-life the picture looks. Its fun to watch and see all the detail.
