In 4K Movies/ Content, 4K News, 4K TVs by Matt Bronowicz26 Comments

It was time {last year} to upgrade to a 4K Ultra HD Television.  Prices began to drop down to normal levels in 2016.  Today, prices for a 4K TV are no higher than prices for a 1080p HD TV.  Since 4K TVs are replacing 1080p HD TVs, manufacturers and merchants realized that they had to significantly drop prices in order to encourage more consumers to upgrade to 4K.  Do not buy another 1080 HD TV!  Upgrade to 4K.

4K TVs have now been enhanced to include HDR (High Dynamic Range) and  WCG  (Wide Color Gamut) technology.  Both of these increase the quality of a 4K UHD TV even though it already contains FOUR more times as many pixels as the traditional 1080 HD TV contains.  This means FOUR times as much data flowing through to present the watcher with an incredible picture image.  Better color, contrast, blacks & whites, as well as depth & clarity.  Put all of this together and you have the most stunning, real, true-to-life picture image on the planet.

Currently, in 2017, you can purchase a 50-inch 4K Ultra HD TV with HDR for $500-$600 on Amazon.  Sometimes you can find even better deals than this.  For example, Amazon is still trying to get rid of 2016 4K TV stock.  Therefore, they have slashed prices for ’16 models.  These are a great find!  There is no difference between a 2017 model and a 2016 model so you may as well enjoy the cost-savings.  This special won’t last long.  Click on our Amazon links now (any of them take you there) and start shopping.

Regarding 4K Content….the rumors are NOT true anymore.  Sure, back in 2013 & 2014 there was limited 4K movies & TV shows to watch on a new 4K TV.  But, this simply is NOT the case anymore.  There was plenty of 4K content to watch even back in 2016!  If you go to Walmarts website and search for 4K movies, you will find pages of 4K UHD Blu-Ray discs on sale for as low as $17.  They even sell triple movie packs in 4K like the Hunger Games.

Not only 4K UHD Blu-Rays, but you can stream 4K content all day long.  There are many streaming TV apps now to choose from.  Netflix is our favorite.  For only $2 a month more than their typical membership you can gain access to all of their Ultra High Definition (4K) moives, TV Shows and Documentaries.  Without this 4K membership you will not see this UHD content listed.  And, they offer A LOT nowadays.

Then, you have VuDu, HuLu, YouTube and Amazon Instant Video.  ALL of these also offer 4K content.  All you need is a 4K Ultra HD Television.

Now is the time to buy a 4K Ultra HD Television.  Of course, if you have a brand new 1080p HD TV, then we recommend you wait a bit unless another room in your home needs a TV.  Then, add a 4K TV to it.  Our point is that you are missing out.  These 4K TVs are super impressive to watch.  That is all there is to it.

Don’t take our word for it. Go to your local electronics store and see for yourself.  Ask the salesman for a demo.  Be sure you request real, native 4K content to be watched on a new 4K UHD TV.  The reason we mention ‘real native content’ is because there is such thing as ‘fake 4K’.  It is referred to this because some films were originally produced in 2K using 2K cameras, but then had the resolution digitally enhanced (UPSCALED) to finally be labeled  “4K” content.  This type of content is not real or full 4K level.

Don’t Take Our Word For It!

However, the resolution is still higher than its original form of 720 or 1080- 2K, but just not full 4K- 4000 High Definition.  The resolution on an upscaled film varies.  It can range from 1500 to 2500.  This would be in between 2K and 4K.

A real or native 4K film was mastered using 4K camera systems.  Its as simple as that.  It all comes down to what kind of cameras were used to make a film.  The cameras are what ultimately capture the ‘data’ and deliver the resolution.  If a 2K camera has a maximum resolution of 2000, then it will not be able to present as good of a picture image as a 4K – 4000 resolution camera.

Below, we have provided you a very helpful link to a database that verifies if a movie or TV show is Real or Fake 4K.  This database shows if 2K or 4K cameras were used to make the film.  Obviously, the more recent movies and shows were more likely mastered with 4K cameras.  And, the older movies were filmed with 2K cameras and then upscaled to a higher resolution and called 4K.  These are referred to as “Fake 4K” as mentioned above.  This is important to know as you research various films in this database below.

real or fake 4K uhd content

real 4K uhd Movies

You now know the benefits of buying a new 4K Ultra HD TV.  There is plenty of 4K content, prices are as low as 1080p HD TVs, and the picture image is FOUR times better with a much higher quality of resolution (than 720 or 1080p HD TV).  It is almost too hard to believe.  When I first saw a 4K demo I was shocked.  I thought to myself “Is this some kind of special government program?”  “Are these TVs actually going to be for sale to the general public?”.

It was amazing.  The picture was so clear and real looking that it was like I was peering through a window at a live scene.  I describe it as being similar to what you would see with your bare naked eyes in person.  Its like they have been able to duplicate exactly what eye-balls see and you ware just re-watching it on your screen.

By now you probably think we are crazy.  You are saying:  “YEA RIGHT, THERE IS NO WAY THAT A TV COULD BE THIS GOOD!”.   Well, we are here to tell you that 4K TVs are this good.  We have dedicated an entire website blog to ‘all things 4k’ because we have been so impressed by this technology.

Watching a movie on our 65-in Sony 4K Ultra HD SMART Television is a thrill.  I get excited to watch new movies in 4K because you see tiny details that you never got to see on a 1080p HD TV.  Its fun & exciting to re-watch older movies because 4K puts them in a totally different perspective.  The actors & actresses look real.  As if they are standing right there in your family room.  You can see skin pores, wrinkles and moles.

Actresses have been known to dislike 4K TVs in this manner.  They say that viewers can now see all of their blemishes.  Same with newscasters…the TV image use to hide a lot of the facial blemishes or make a person looke 20 LBs. heavier.  Not so with a 4K image.  None of this is true anymore.

Upscaling Justifies Buying A New 4K TV

You can see EVERYTHING while watching a movie, especially if it was filmed using 4K cameras.  There is a difference.  Some consumers have purchased a 4K TV uneducated.  They received it and began watching.  They then became disappointed because they thought that everything they watched would be in this awesome 4K resolution.

Here Is The Scoop On This:    Not everything you watch will be in 4K.  As mentioned above, you have to either stream real 4K moives & TV shows, or rent/buy 4K UHD Blu-Rays.  You can easily stream 4K right through your 4K TV because all 4Ks have TV apps like Netflix.  All you need is an internet connection.  Of which, by the way, needs to be a fast enough speed to handle the 4K data.

Some networks are beginning to broadcast in 4K Ultra HD.  A few weeks ago the History Channel played a series in 4K UHD and it was incredible to watch.  If you owned a 4K TV you benefited from this.  If not, then you were only able to see the maximum resolution that your TV offers  (which is probably 1080 HD).

Producers of movies are not the only UPSCALERS.  This is also called “UPCONVERTING”.  All 4K TVS also upscale automatically any HD movie or TV show that plays on it.  It has to be at least 720 or 1080 High Definition in order to be upscaled.  Upscaling means that the TV processor will take an HD 1080-made movie and fill it with lots of extra resolution.  It basically uses the extra pixels that 4K provides and 1080 HD does not.  It cannot upscale to full 4K, but the picture image still looks much better than 1080 High Definition.

This upscaling feature alone is what makes buying a 4K TV now worth your while.  Almost everything you watch will be a higher resolution and quality than you have ever seen.  An upscaled moive or who might not blow your mind like a real, native 4K movie would.  And, this might be where some of the disappointment came from since consumers were not informed.

4K Ultra HD Tvs

  1. Thank you for sharing this Post and our site 4KADVICE. We could not find any information about 4K TVs back in 2014 when we became interested after seeing a 4K demo in a store. So, we wanted to help the public and give consumers updated, helpful and relevant information and reviews about 4K Ultra HD TVs. This is when 4KADVICE.com was born. By sharing, you are helping us inform others so that they can make an informed decision BEFORE they upgrade their 1080p HD TV. Buy 4K, do not buy another 1080 HD TV is our main advice.

  2. What a great advice for skipping 1080 and go for 4K. I like that and what you mentioned here is true. I realized the price has been dropped significantly nowadays.

So perhaps I might be switching to 4k soon. I always thought that not possible purchase online due to tv is a fragile item.

After reading your last paragraph then I know amazon offering shipping guarantee which is more confident to buy it online.

Thanks for letting me know this.

Hi Maxx, thanks for making a comment on our Post and supporting our site in this way.

You should upgrade to a 4K Ultra HD TV and you wont be disappointed. Its awesome to watch movies or play games on them. The picture looks so much more real than it does on a 1080p HD TV.

Please consider using our Amazon links to take you there and do your shopping that way. It would help us greatly. Here are some other Posts that you might like.

  3. Crazy informative page! I actually have a few 4K TVs at home but got them a couple years back and now I know from your page just how inexpensive 4K TVs have gotten.
I really liked the flow of your writing. It seems very down to earth and not like you are necessarily trying to sell me something but give me all the best information I can have about 4K TVs. So I think you are doing well there. I like the look of your site, with all the 4K TV representations. I would say you could clean it up a bit more though. Maybe have all your adds to the side instead of them popping up in the middle of your text? Otherwise good information and well thought out writing. Keep up the good work!

Hi James – first and foremost thank you for commenting on our Post and supporting our site http://www.4KADVICE.com in this way.

I did the same thing and bought a 4K TV over 2 years ago. I paid a steep price. Today, my same SONY 4K TV is more than half the cost that I paid! But, I have been enjoying it and gaming for nearly 3 years now, so it was worth the extra cost in my opinion.

If you need any other 4K equipment just search our site. thanks MB.

  4. Thanks for all of the great information on 4K TVs! Your site is very well put together.

I have a couple of questions:

    1) Do you find it necessary to upgrade to a faster internet speed to take full advantage of the 4K TV? I wouldn’t want to spend so much on a TV and have my internet ruin it!

    2) Do 4K DVDs tend to cost more than their older counterparts?

    1. Author

Hi Ashley, so glad you read our post and commented. This helps to support our site http://www.4KADVICE.com so thanks again!

      1) GREAT QUESTION! Yes, you will need to have a fast enough internet speed to use 4K content movies and TV shows. However, the good news is that internet speeds and the cost of them has come a long way. Today, you can get super fast internet for reasonable monthly prices depending on where you live. Just call your Internet provider and double check with them. Tell them you have a 4K TV and will be streaming 4K movies and you need their internet package with a fast enough speed. Ask what they recommend. The internet speed you currently have might be perfectly fine for 4K stuff.

      2) YEs, in general a 4K Blu-ray does cost a little more. However, walkmart, target and other placed like Amazon online have specials for 4K UHD dvs all the time. You can find 4K dvdss for about the same price as a normal DVD nowadays. Just look for specials and sales. Soon, 4K DVD will replace normal DVDs and prices will be the same. Thanks again and here are some other Posts that might help you. – Matt B.

  5. I’m looking to buy a 4K TV as I’m still using a plasma TV at home lol. I know it’s a very old TV but it was still working fine. However, I would really like an upgrade as I use the TV a lot for watching TV shows and for playing on my PS4 and would really love to have a crisp high quality image with higher frames per second.
I’m looking for a 60inch 4K UHD TV preferably Samsung or Sony. Would have any recommendations?

    1. Author

Hi Michel – Glad to hear that you are interested in upgrading to a 4K Ultra HD TV. This is a wise decision and you will NOT regret it once you start watching the amazing awesome picture image that it gives us!

Plasma was the best TV in its time. You know your ‘stuff’ about TVs I can tell you that because you own a Plasma. Unfortunatley they stopped making Plasma several years ago when 4K Technology first came out. They saw that 4K TVs were a lot better quality higher resolution than Plasma could ever be so they stopped.

Gaming is the best on a 4K TV. You should consider getting a xBOX S. which is their first 4K console. Regardless, since every 4K TV UPSCALES…this means any game you watch no matter which console you use is going to look more awesome than anything you have ever seen.

I know this to be true because I live it! I play PlayStation on my Sony 65-inch 4K UHD SMART TV and the graphics and imaggry are the best that I have ever seen or played. You cannot go wrong with a SONY or Samsung. Between the two I would suggest SONY. They have good prices for being the top TV. Sony pioneered 4K technology so they might have the ‘edge’ when it comes to quality. However, many top manufacturers make really good TVs.

Here are some Posts that give you specific recommendations about which 4K TVS to buy and prices. THIS WILL HELP YOU DECIDE. Also, you should buy it on Amazon. They have the lowest prices and best selection. They give you FREE 2 day shipping that is protected and guaranteed. We had our Sony delivered right into our family room and within 2 days of buying on Amazon.com we were playing PlayStation games like Battlefield on our 4K TV . It is awesome and the best! Good Luck, Matt B.

  6. I stumbled upon this at just the right time. Currently I am thinking of getting a new TV, mine has about ended its life…

You mentioned some great cost saving potential on Amazon. Is this sale something they do constantly or was it a one time thing you were able to note?

Also whats the life expectancy of one of these TV’s, I’m seeing that more and more new electronics are needing to be upgraded as newer versions are getting released and service for older models obsolete.

We are trying to reach more people to educate them about these awesome 4K TVS which are replacing 1080 HD TVs. so please help us by SHARING our Post and site.

Great questions…first Amazon always has specials and deals. They come and go, but just know that overall Amazon is by far the best place to buy your first 4K TV. They have the lowest prices in general and the largest selection. You can read reviews from actual purchasers of the same TV you might want and listen to what they say about it. You cant get that in a store. They also protect their shipping and guarantee it with 2- Day , Free shipping. It comes fast and not much waiting. You avoid salespeople also who can be very annoying following you around in the store. We bought our first SONY 4K Ultra HD TV on Amazon and saved over $350!! It was not even a special deal…it was just Amazon’s low price on this Sony 65-inch 4k TV. We love it. We use Amazon for just about everything and are Prime members, Which means free instant movies and music as well as FREE 2-day shipping for the entire year.

You can link over to Amazon from our site 4kADVICE.com which would really help us out.

4K TVs have a long life. They will be around for more than 15 years since they are replacing 1080 HD TV entirely and 1080 HD TV have lasted more than 15 years.

A TV itself is made very well these days. they have mastered the manufacturing. Our research shows that a 4K TV just like a 1080p HD TV will last a consumer up to 7 years. That is about the average, so you cannot go wrong there. Here are some other helpful Posts for you below. Please come back to us when you buy 4K. – MB.

  7. Hey thanks for making an article about 4k TVs and the difference between 4k tv’s vs 1080p TVs.
Its good to see the big chart details of difference between two TVs picture quality. I found that to be very helpful.

Do you think that the 1080 P TV still have their uses?

Good question, YES 1080 HD TVs still have a purpose since only 15% of households have even upgraded to 4K yet. They have been waiting for prices to drop WHICH THEY FINALLY HAVE. Prices for a 4K UHD TV are now the same as prices for a 1080p HD TV>

This is because 4K TVs are replacing 1080p HD TVs and manufactuers only want to make 4K. But, this will take time and so for the millions of people who have 1080 HD TVs…they still need to be able to watch HD movies and shows. 1080 will be around for quite some time until 4K fully takes over. Good question. MB.

People will be upgrading to 4K TVs when they are ready to. Consumers should not buy another 1080 HD TV and soon there will not be too many for sale. 9. Really helpful and persuading post, I already had a 4k for 1 and 6 months already, but im glad it really catching one because I really love to watch things in 4k, the difference between 1080 and 4k is astonishing!! Fwiw I liked your suggestions of tvs and streaming services!

So glad that you agree and understand how awesome 4K TVs are and watching real, native 4K content just blows away watching something on a 1080 HD. 1080p HD was great back in its time especially compared to SD- Standard Definition tube box TVs.

But, 4K TVs are exactly FOUR times higher pixel resolution than any 1080 HD TV and its makes a BIG difference.

Doesn’t it look so freakin real and true-to-life while watching faces and landscapes! HEre are some other helpful Posts. One in particular will be VERY helpful for you. This Page contains a database of all movies and shows.

It verifies how the film was made and if it was a 2K -made film and then digitally enhanced to be called “4K UHD
, or if the film is true 4K being in that it was filmed using 4K camera systems. These are real or native 4K.

All of them are great and better than any 1080 -made film. But, if you want the absolute best out of your new 4K TV then you can choose to watch a 4K camera made movie by looking at this database.

Also, the best of the best of the best is watching 4K UHD Blu-Rays on your 4K. These are the top best picture out of all other 4K content. – Matt B.

  10. Wow I never fully understood the differences between a 4K TV and a 1080 HD TV . However, comparing the two made a very convincing argument. I am not in the market to buy a TV at the moment, but your detailed description of a 4K TV helps make the options super simple and easy to pick. Not only did you write a very well educated article, but you also respond to questions and comments with good information. Thank you for covering all the bases.

Hi Ellen – thank you so much for taking the time to read our Post at 4KADVICE.com. We strive to provide helpful and current information and reviews about this newer 4K UHD technology so that people can make better purchase decisions when the time comes for them to upgrade their 1080p HD TV.

We hope we have helped you do so. Most people do not still know what 4K is or what it means so you are not alone or unusual. But, since prices for a 4K TV have dropped down to the same level that 1080p HD TVs are priced at…,more and more people are upgrading to 4K in 2017 than ever before.

4K tvs have been on shelves for over 3 years now, but it has been slow going. This is why manufacturers purposely lowered overall prices (they said this in interviews).

Most people do not know what “4K” is or what it means so you are not alone.  This is why we created this site to help people learn about 4K so that they can make better purchase decisions BEFORE they buy another TV.

4K TVS are what is replacing 1080 HD TVs JUST LIKE HD Tvs replaced SD- Standard Definition TVs in the early 2000s.

This is just the next step further with a higher resolution and pixels in the display on a 4K which makes it look that much more real than what you see on a 1080 HD.  HD isn’t bad especially compared to SD.  But, Ultra HD 4K is FOUR times better and higher quality resolution than 1080 HD.  It makes a huge difference.

When you watch 4K movies and shows its so real looking that it makes it seem like you are right there on the scene.  Or, like you looking through a window at a live scene on the set.  Very true-to-life and fun and exciting to watch and see all the details.
